Has your skin seen better days? Want to get better skin but not sure where to start? Is microdermabrasion an alien term? Bin the face wipes and become a skin goddess with Hickman House.
One of the reasons so many women neglect their skin is due to a hectic, busy lifestyle. If you’re a working mum for example, a 30 minute cleansing and toning routine is probably the last thing you feel like doing once the kids are tucked up in bed. In that case, microdermabrasion may be the best course of action.
Tackling sallow skin, mild acne, discolouration and scars, microdermabrasion has been praised as a low cost, quick fix solution designed for patients with minimal skin issues. Individuals with deep rooted acne scars and skin ailments may require an alternative method of treatment, but for women seeking basic improvements this is certainly a viable option.
Wondering how microdermabrasion works? This treatment is the application of tiny rough grains to buff away the surface layer of skin. By passing a fine diamond head with a suction notion over the skin, dead skin cells are gently removed leaving the surface of the skin silky smooth. The treatment is painless and safe.
There is no ‘perfect age’ to get microdermabrasion, however women with more troublesome skin issues may wish to opt for an alternative treatment method.
Chemical peels are used to create an even and controlled exfoliation of damaged skin cells. The benefits of chemical peel include:
· Improved skin tone
· Dissolved blackheads
· Reduced discolouration
· Minimized fine lines and scars
We offer 4 different peels and generally the deeper the chemical peel, the more effective. However customers should choose the depth of their peel based on how problematic their skin is. For example the Jessner peel would suit somebody with minimal skin problems whereas the TCA peel is designed to treat more severe skin conditions such as sun damaged skin and acne.
Although botox is generally aimed towards middle-aged women, it is not uncommon for ladies in their mid-twenties to also opt for this treatment. Nobody wants to age, nobody wants wrinkles or lines, so botox is the closest thing to erasing all three. Is it any wonder then that this treatment is so popular?
Botox can safely and successfully block the nerve impulses that trigger wrinkles and is considered to be one of the safest and widely researched cosmetic products out there.
At Hickman House, we offer a range of skin rejuvenating treatments including botox, chemical peel and microdermabrasion. For a full list of the services we offer, visit our treatments price page.
Whether it’s a starfish on your ankle or an entire arm sleeve, all tattoos require aftercare. Find out how to nurture your new investment with the Hickman House guide to tattoo aftercare.
After you leave the tattoo parlour, your artist will not be responsible for any infections or problems which could arise from a lack of aftercare. It’s mandatory that you take proper care of your tattoo as even the most stylish designs can turn into festering disasters if they get infected.
As tempting as it will be to show off that new rocky balboa tattoo, don’t. Your artist will have taken great care in covering up your tattoo to keep airborne bacteria from accessing the wound. Taking off that breathable and absorbent bandage too soon could lead to bacteria, infection and suddenly your new tattoo doesn’t look so good. Bandages should be kept on for a minimum of 2 hours.
Some tattoo artists have taken to wrapping up tattoos in saran (plastic) wrap. The mentality behind this tactic is that customers will be able to show their friends the new tattoo (due to the transparent nature of the bandage) while keeping their tattoo completely covered up. However this tactic has been shunned by physicians due to the non-breathable and temperature raising properties of plastic wrap.
Remove your gauze bandage by patting lukewarm water over the infected area, this will allow the bandage to easily come off without discomfort. Next, wash your hands before treating the tattoo with an antibacterial soap solution. Splash droplets of water over your tattoo to cleanse it using your fingertips – do not hold your tattoo directly under the tap. Pat dry with a paper towel and leave to dry for up to an hour.
Although it may not be schedule-friendly, new tattoos should be washed at least 2 to 3 times daily for a period of 2-3 weeks. The main purpose of this is to ward off infection and allow excess tattoo moisture to evaporate.
Shower as normal during this period while taking care to keep the tattooed area out of the water as much as possible.
After washing your tattoo you will need to apply a moisturising/soothing lotion. Some people choose to use Vaseline to protect the abraded skin, however unscented Vitamin A & D ointment is a stronger option as it helps to protect abraded skin but also contains all the vitamins you need to soothe and heal. Use this solution sparingly for 2-3 weeks.
Although a tattoo is believed to be a life choice, the reality is that many people live to regret their decision. If this is the case then you may want to consider laser tattoo removal. In addition to providing laser tattoo removal treatment at our Cardiff laser clinic, we also offer a wealth of in-depth information on the process which can be found on the Hickman House website. Call us today on 029 20713399 to discuss your options.

Tattoos used to be a symbol of anarchy and were generally disregarded as something that was best saved for pirates and sailors, but today tattoos are widely accepted throughout society with many choosing body ink as a form of self-expression.
Deciding to get a tattoo can be down to a number of reasons, some people want to express their interests, feelings or spiritual beliefs, whereas others get inked to remember those who have passed away. However, no matter how ‘individual’ we are led to believe tattoos are, there is definitely a recurring theme in the ink world. From anchor tattoos to butterflies, let’s take a look at the world’s most common tattoos and their associated meanings.
Originally coveted by pirates, the anchor is considered to be a traditional tattoo which has surpassed its original purpose as a trademark for men associated with the sea, although it continues to be loved by sailors, seamen and members of the navy it is also now very popular amongst rock stars, hipsters and women. This tattoo represents safety, hope and salvation.
The chain is a design which usually represents a bracelet, necklace or anklet, this is without a doubt one of the most commonly chosen designs by men and women alike. If the chain is broken, this usually represents that the person has been relieved from a burden or feels free. However, when the links are connected, this can mean that the person feels or has felt enslaved and imprisoned both physically and emotionally.
This holometabolous insect is usually chosen for its colourful appearance and beautiful features, and is particularly popular amongst women, in fact, so popular is this tattoo, that it even has a famous Philip Pullman novel named after it! As far as deeper meanings go, in Asian countries the butterfly tattoo is believed to symbolise marital bliss, while in Western countries the tattoo refers to transformation and immortality.
Whilst it may be fun to be a member of the most popular tattoo club in the world, the amount of people with a tattoo similar to yours may begin to grow tiresome and even grate on you after a while. If you do find yourself covering up the tattoo which you once used to show off, you may be interested in learning more about the tattoo removal process.
Whether you choose to love or loathe them, tattoos have become a modern staple of the 21st century with everybody from Rihanna to Scarlett Johansson sporting an ink or two. From name tattoos to entire arm sleeves, tacky to tasteful, weird to wonderful, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst celebrity tattoos:
Scarlett Johannson’s Multi-Coloured Sunrise
The Lost in Translation film star is widely considered to be one Hollywood’s modern sex symbols, so her choice of tattoo is perhaps a little unconventional considering. Scarlett has a bright multi-coloured sunrise on her left forearm which looks suspiciously similar to one of the stickers you were given at the dentists as a child - an odd choice of tattoo if any.
Although the star likes to keep her personal life under wraps, a sunrise tends to symbolise new beginnings and life.
Sienna Miller’s Star Tattoo
Star tattoos are not exactly a new phenomenon, it seems that whenever people have an urge to get inked but can’t quite make their mind up on what to have, stars are a particularly popular choice. Sienna Miller opted for three tiny blue stars on her right shoulder, we’re not quite sure what the reasoning behind this decision was, but the actress claims that each star represents honour, trust and love.
Hayden Panettiere’s Misspelt Back Tattoo
If there’s ever a time you might wish you’d stepped away from the needle or at least enlisted the help of a phrase dictionary before going ahead with the deed, it’s getting a tattoo which is spelt wrong.
Hayden Panettiere is sporting a regrettable back phrase tattoo which reads ‘live without regrets’ in Italian, but the last word has a misspelling. The actress is currently going through the tattoo removal process, but it might be a little while before she can truly live without regret.
